Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 received the assent of the President of India on 27th December 2016 repealing the PwD Act, 1995.

The following categories: a) Acid Attack Victim, b) Autism Spectrum Disorder, c) Blindness, d) Cerebral Palsy, e) Chronic Neurological Conditions, f) Dwarfism, g) Hemophilia, h) Hearing Impairment, i) Intellectual Disability, j) Leprosy Cured Person, k) Locomotor Disability, m) Low-Vision, n) Mental Illness, o) Muscular Dystrophy, p) Multiple Sclerosis, q) Parkinson’s Disease, r) Specific Learning Disabilities, s) Speech and Language Disability, t) Thalassemia, u) Sickle Cell Disease, and v) Multiple Disabilities.

National Trust for Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disability Act, 1999 has provisions for legal guardianship of the four categories of disabilities and creation of enabling environment for as much independent living as possible.
