"Grant-In-Aid to Tripura and Mizoram for Rehabilitation of Bru Migrants" is a Repatriation Scheme by the Department of Home, Ministry of Home Affairs. The scheme aims at the permanent settlement of Bru (Reang) families. In 1997-1998, about 30,000 Bru (Reang) families migrated to North Tripura due to ethnic violence in Mizoram. Repatriation began in 2010, with around 1,622 Bru families (8,573 persons) resettled in Mizoram by 2014. An agreement in 2018 aimed to repatriate 5,407 Bru families, and by November 2019, 328 families (1,369 persons) returned to Mizoram. Some Bru families expressed a desire to settle in Tripura. A new agreement in January 2020 offered a financial assistance package of approximately ₹6,61,00,00,000 for the permanent settlement of Bru (Reang) families in Tripura. The assistance package included Fixed Deposits (₹4,00,000 per family), monthly cash assistance (₹5,000 per family), free ration for 2 years, House Building Assistance (₹1,50,000 per family), land plots (30x40 sq. ft.), and free transportation to the place of resettlement. As of January 13, 2023, 6,179 families have been settled in 11 locations in Tripura.
